Founded by Doug and Katsuko Sparks in their garage in San Francisco's Inner Sunset, Sunset Cellars believes in a minimalist winemaking style and respect for our grower's efforts in the vineyards. Our winemaking objective is to express and refine the flavors and characteristics created in the vineyard.
All grapes are hand-sorted before crushing. Wines are fermented in half-ton containers and punched down by hand. Racking, done when necessary, is as gentle as possible, and aging features the restrained use of new oak, to enhance the grapes' flavors and not overpower them. Our goal is to develop supple wines with ample fruit that celebrate the distinguishing characteristics produced in different regions and vineyards.

Afterglow - Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 /Green Valley
Taste the fruit of our labor of love. This deeply colored wine offers a complex mix of dark fruit flavors with hints of spice and cocoa. A touch of Syrah enhanced the cabernet fruit and tannins with bold flavors and a silky texture.
Barbera - 2010 / Napa Valley
Despite a cool growing season, the vintage yielded ripe, concentrated fruit and the firm, crisp acidity inherent in Barbera. Inviting dark cherry, blackberry and coffee aromas lead to bright, ripe, mouth-filling plum, berry and black cherry flavors with hints of spice, and a touch of almond and chocolate. The balance and acidity make it a versatile wine for a wide range of foods.
Cat or Tiger No.2 / North Coast
Like the 19th century Zen painting that inspired the name, Cat or Tiger offers a unique, unconventional blend that expands the characters of its component wines in surprising ways. Cat or Tiger No.2 offers complex flavors of dark cherry, ripe plum, and licorice, layered over the earthiness of chocolate and dried herb. The bright acidity from the younger 2013 Barbera enlivens the mature depth of the 2008 Petite Sirah, resulting in a fresh and balanced wine.

Hydrangea - 2018 Rose of Pinot Noir / Clarksburg
“Hydrangea” Rose of Pinot Noir is a wine to welcome summer. It is dry and savory with lovely notes of yogurt and brie and a unique salty florality reminiscent of sakura mochi, framed by hints of classic Pinot Noir flavors of strawberry and red cherry. The fruit is from the up-and-coming Clarksburg region with the constant river delta breeze and the ample amount of sun. This wine pairs well with a wide variety of food, from koya dofu and robatayaki to pad thai.
